The highest statistics for "intercity migration" have been recorded to and from Istanbul. The Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) has published the "Internal Migration Statistics" bulletin for the year 2021. According to these statistics, the rate of interprovincial migrant population was nearly 3.18 percent in the years 2007-2008, which followed a fluctuating trend and reached 3.28 percent in 2021. In this context, last year, 2 million 777 thousand and 797 people migrated between provinces in Turkey. Men constituted 47.5 percent of this population, while women accounted for 52.5 percent.
The highest interprovincial migration in the past year occurred in the age group of 20 to 24 years. In Turkey, the most significant migration activity last year was among individuals aged 20 to 24, with 731,284 people involved, comprising 41.6% men and 58.4% women. A portion of these migrations is attributed to students who, due to the difference between their university city and their place of residence, were somewhat compelled to migrate. In 2021, 386,646 individuals in the age bracket of 18 to 24 years enrolled in universities located in provinces different from their residence. The proportion of these individuals among the young population aged 18 to 24 was 4.2%, with the rate for men calculated at 3.7% and for women at 4.7%. Among the students who enrolled in universities in other provinces, Isparta province had the highest rate of registration in universities outside their home province at 17.5%, followed by Bayburt at 16.8% and Burdur at 16.7%. Conversely, provinces with the lowest rates of enrollment in universities outside their place of residence were Şanlıurfa at 0.2%, Şırnak at 0.4%, and Mardin and Diyarbakır at 0.7%. For the first time, the "Address Registration due to Migration" system was unveiled. Internal migration information in Turkey is systematically produced each year based on the Address-Based Population Registration System (ADNKS). In addition to the annual internal migration statistics, the reasons for the migration of the migrant population were, for the first time, compiled based on administrative records within the scope of the "2021 Population and Housing Census" (NKS).
