Gas Production at Turkey's Sakarya Field to Increase Fivefold by 2028

A 5-Fold Increase in Gas Production at Sakarya Field by 2028

The Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey, Alparslan Bayraktar, announced that currently, the production of natural gas at the Sakarya gas field meets the needs of 3 million households, and this amount will increase 5 times by 2028, so that the entire residential natural gas demand of the country will be supplied from this field.

Significant Increase in Energy Demand in Turkey

According to the ministry's statement, Bayraktar, during the iftar event organized by the National Turkish Students' Union, pointed out that with the growing young population and the country's economic development, the demand for oil and natural gas has tripled over the past 23 years.

National Energy Policy to Reduce Dependency

The Minister of Energy, referring to the implementation of the National Energy and Mining Policy since 2016, said: "Our goal is to reduce dependency on energy imports and achieve independence in this field. For us, energy independence is a matter of national security."

Turkey; Owner of the Most Modern Drilling and Exploration Fleet

Bayraktar stated that Turkey no longer partners with foreign companies in the exploration of oil and gas, adding: "We now have the world's most advanced fleet of seismic survey and drilling vessels. We have four ships capable of drilling up to 12 kilometers below the water surface."

Increased Gas Production at Sakarya and Oil at Gabar

He reminded: "On August 21, 2020, we made the largest natural gas discovery in the history of the Republic of Turkey at the Sakarya field, and within less than three years, we brought the gas to shore. Now, we meet the gas needs of 3 million households ourselves, and in April, with a 25 percent production increase, we will reach a milestone."

"By 2028, with a 5-fold increase in production, all of Turkey's residential gas needs will be met from the Sakarya field."

Expansion of Oil Activities at Gabar

Bayraktar, referring to the situation of the Gabar oil field, said: "In an area that was previously inaccessible due to terrorism, we now have more than 90 active wells, and daily production has reached 80,000 barrels. The oil produced at Gabar is the highest quality oil in Turkey, and God willing, we will soon exceed 100,000 barrels per day."

Turkey's Presence in International Energy and Mining Markets

He also added: "Today, Turkey is active in the exploration of natural gas and minerals in various countries such as Somalia, Libya, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and some African countries. We also have our first gold mine in Niger and hope to extract about 3.5 tons of gold from it by 2026."
