Prison sentence for Mehmet Ali Erbil in illegal betting case
Mehmet Ali Erbil, a well-known Turkish presenter and actor, was sentenced to 10 months in prison in a case on “promoting illegal betting.” However, this sentence was suspended.
Conviction in Istanbul Court
The 20th Criminal Court of First Instance in Istanbul, after reviewing the case, sentenced Erbil to 10 months in prison and a 1000-lira fine for promoting and encouraging illegal betting and games of chance.
Suspension of Prison Sentence and Judicial Supervision
According to the final verdict of the court, Erbil’s prison sentence was suspended, and he will be under judicial supervision for one year.
Details of the Prosecutor’s Indictment
In the indictment prepared by the Istanbul Prosecutor’s Office, it was noted that well-known social media figures used their fame to encourage users to engage in illegal betting.
“These individuals have influence over society due to their large number of followers, and some of their published content has a promotional aspect for illegal betting.”
Trip to Malta and Connection to Financial Benefits
The indictment further stated that Mehmet Ali Erbil traveled to Malta upon invitation from a group, stayed there for free, and this was considered as receiving financial benefits and recorded in the case.
Prosecutor’s Demand for Heavy Sentence
The prosecutor had requested a prison sentence of one to three years and up to 3000 days of judicial fines for Erbil, but in the end, the court issued a lighter sentence.
