Husnu Kerem Sen Released from Custody
Husnu Kerem Sen (Hüsnü Kerem Şen), known as the former brother-in-law of singer Mustafa Sandal, has been released from custody in a trial where he faced charges including "Intentional murder," "Simple injury," "Possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition," and "Damage to property."
The case stems from an armed attack at an entertainment venue in Izmir Cesme (İzmir Çeşme) in 2023, which resulted in the death of security guard Samet Oztaskin (Samet Öztaşkın). Following the incident, Sen fled abroad and was later brought back to Turkey under an Interpol Red Notice.
The court ordered Sen's release under judicial control measures, including the requirement to wear an electronic bracelet, house arrest, and a ban on traveling abroad.
Details of the Cesme Incident and New Footage
The name of Husnu Kerem Sen first came to public attention after the shooting in 2023. According to reports, a dispute broke out between security personnel and a group that was allegedly denied entry to the venue. The argument escalated into an armed conflict, leading to the death of Samet Oztaskin and injuries to several others. New security camera footage of the incident has surfaced, showing the moment the dispute turned into a gunfight and depicting Sen with a firearm in his hand.
Release in the Second Case Involving Threat and Extortion
In addition to the murder trial, Sen was also facing charges related to threats, looting, and kidnapping directed at Abdullah Taskin (Abdullah Taşkın) and his family. Allegations suggested that Sen pressured the couple over a dispute involving millions of liras. The investigation included surveillance footage of an assault occurring in a residence. The prosecution filed charges for "Qualified robbery," "Membership in a criminal organization," and "Deprivation of liberty."
Appearing before the Istanbul 39th High Criminal Court, the court considered the duration of his detention and the principle of proportionality, subsequently deciding on his release in this second case as well.
Current Legal Status
Sen continues to be tried at the Izmir 21st High Criminal Court for the charges related to the Cesme shooting. The court's interim decision noted that the Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office is conducting a separate investigation into Sen regarding allegations of armed threats against multiple individuals.
The court cited the length of detention and the possibility of a change in the classification of the crimes as the primary reasons for his release.
