Turkish artist trapped by fake visa website
Turkish folk music artist Nalan Höke Turan applied for an Italy visa through a fraudulent website. She lost 90,000 lira in the scam and notified authorities.
A member of the Cumhurbaşkanlığı Klasik Türk Müziği Korosu, Turan filled out an online form on a site that later proved to be fake. The network exploited official-looking pages to deceive applicants.
How the fake site lured the victim
Investigators found the page mirrored the look and flow of legitimate systems, steering payments outside official channels. Scammers relied on misleading branding and forms to build trust.
This pattern is common in online fraud, particularly targeting travel and passport applications, with reports rising in recent months.
Prosecutors open an investigation
The case is being handled by the forgery, fraud and cybercrimes bureau of Anadolu Cumhuriyet Başsavcılığı. Initial findings indicate the visa request was submitted via a fake site and payments were routed to accounts tied to suspects.
Authorities continue to collect digital evidence and trace financial flows, with updates expected as the probe advances.
Simultaneous raids in eight provinces
As the investigation progressed, police carried out coordinated operations across eight provinces. A total of 12 people were detained and linked to the scheme.
Digital devices, bank accounts and phone lines connected to the case were seized and sent for forensic analysis.
Judicial process and suspects' status
One detainee was released after giving a statement, while 11 others were referred to Anadolu Adalet Sarayı. Prosecutors said efforts to map the network’s full connections are ongoing.
The roles of each individual are expected to become clearer after interrogations and analysis of the seized data.
Growing tactics in visa fraud
Experts warn of a rise in fake visa application sites, especially targeting travel and passport services. Criminals use spoofed domains and cloned pages to confuse applicants.
Users should verify URLs carefully, avoid payments outside secure gateways, and report any suspicious activity immediately.
Advice for visa applicants
Officials urge applicants to use only official channels for appointments and payments. Any suspected irregularities should be reported directly to the police.
It is also advisable to access diplomatic mission websites via verified links and avoid untrusted sponsored search results.
