Controversial Proposal from Demet Akalin on Ramadan TV Programs
As religious television programs and high-budget productions return to screens each year during Ramadan, Turkish singer Demet Akalin (Demet Akalın) has entered the debate with a striking proposal. In a post shared on social media, she argued that the fees paid to religious scholars appearing on television should instead be distributed to those in need, sparking a fresh public discussion.
Criticism of Ramadan Program Budgets
Debates have continued over the Ramadan broadcasts that feature theology scholars answering religious questions. Addressing the issue, Akalin criticized the budgets allocated to such programs and suggested that these funds could be used more effectively elsewhere.
In her statement, she wrote:
“Distribute the hundreds of thousands of Turkish lira you plan to pay to the scholars appearing on TV during Ramadan to the poor and needy. I am willing to watch last year’s programs.”
“No New Verses Are Revealed Every Year”
The singer also referred to what she sees as repetitive content in these programs, stating:
“After all, no new verses are revealed every year.”
Her remarks quickly gained traction on social media, drawing both support and criticism.
Mixed Reactions on Social Media
Following her comments, some users expressed support for her proposal, arguing that assistance to low-income families should be prioritized, particularly in challenging economic conditions.
Others, however, emphasized that Ramadan programs play an important role in religious education and social awareness, suggesting that reducing or redirecting their budgets may not be an appropriate solution.
The debate has once again brought attention to the format and funding of Ramadan television content, a topic that resurfaces each year as the holy month approaches.
